Women farm workers in their gleaning bonnets and aprons from the Chatteris area.

  • These or similar bonnets were in use for many years after this picture was taken. My grandmother Alice Elizabeth Cave (nee Lawrence) died of sunstroke in June 1950. Her son George said she had taken off her bonnet, but continued to work in the sun. She said she felt unwell and returned the the farmhouse (Normoor) where she was found dead a little while later.
