Spigot Mortar Base. Honeysome Road. Chatteris.
This is a photograph the 3rd known spigot mortar base still visable in Chatteris, others are known to have existed, but have either been covered over or lifted out and destroyed to make way for building, unless you know different? please let the archive know.
This Spigot Mortar base is located in Honeysome Road, along side the river bank , near the bridge.
Used in the the second world war as mounts for mortor or machine guns by the Chatteris Home Guard, they remain as reminder of the history of Chatteris during this time and in my opinion should be preserved for future generations to look back on, as important now as any archaelogical research.
Listen to the late Ron Melton describe how he was involved in the construction of the Spigot Mortar bases , during World War 2, in a recording on this archive.
