Renewing Thatched Roof to Old Boars Head, Chatteris.
Chris Dodson is renewing the Thatch roof to a building on the corner of Station Street and Railway Lane. The building previously known as the Boars Head, is now a private residence. Chris Dodson explained, that the roof was last thatched around 20years ago, by his father and grandfather Ralph and would take around 3 weeks to complete. Chris also works with his pet dog, who is up on the scaffolding, wagging her tail excitedly at passers by. The thatch has been sourced from Bedfordshire and other areas, when I asked Chris why not Norfolk, he explained that thatch is in such demand that other sources are required. Sometimes you see the thatcher has mounted a bird or similar on the roof top,— but not in this case, said Chris ,as he related an interesting story, that many years ago a thatcher would mount two birds on the roof and return later to remove one, this showed that the owner was good for the money. Nowadays complete scaffolding and safety equipment, along with road management systems is required, not like the old days when his grandfather and father worked off the top of a van. Look for further photographs of the progress and completion.
