Market Hill. Chatteris

  • Eastmans was a chain of butchers shops owned by the same company that owned Dewhursts. My grandfather, Frank Sparrow, (on the left in the picture) was born in Haverhill in Suffolk. My grandmother, Florence (nee Mould) was born in Chatteris. They met while they were both working in Cambridge. They were married in 1920 and my father was born in Chatteris (at 76 High Street) in 1921 so my grandfather was certainly managing the shop by that time. My grandfather was noted for his sausages and signed my autograph book when I was a child as “The Sausage King”. The shop had a walk in freezer at the back of the shop itself. There was a passage down the left hand side which went past the office to the work room which had the sausage making machine and other things. There was a disused room further back which was probably not as hygienic as it might have been! – but it wasn’t part of the working premises. My grandfather died suddenly in the shop on the day before his 61st birthday in 1959.
