Gunner Ernest Smith, Tank Corps. of 38 Bridge Street, Chatteris Great War
Taken from The Cambridgeshire Times Friday 8th March 1918. Ernest Smith was born in Sheffield but moved to Chatteris to work as a grocer’s assistant (1911 Census). He later had his own grocer’s business in Somersham and can be seen on the photo with Mabel Bishop (apparently she was his fiancée), Jim & Mary Ann Bishop on Chatteris CCAN & also the photo of Jim Bishop feeding ducks & chickens in the back yard of No. 1 King Edward Road, Chatteris. Mabel Bishop and Ernest Smith never married, but Mabel moved to Somersham after Jim, her father died in 1921, with her elderly mother and let the grocer’s shop to the Military in WWII, then known as the ”County Supplies Store”.
