The text that follows refers to a history brief I included in a recent concert programme, with the agreement of the Church administrators: The Emmanuel Church, Chatteris. The former Methodist Chapel in New Road was built in 1815 by the Wesleyans and enlarged in 1855. What was the United Reformed Church in East Park Street is inscribed ”erected 1838”. With a gable end to the road and built from gault brick with stone dressings, it has a first floor range of 2-light windows with glazing bars flanking a similar 3-light window in Gothic arches. Although Baptists were living in Chatteris in 1654 there was apparently no permanent church. In 1835 a building was erected in West Park Street. It was enlarged in 1869 and renovated in 1885. The Salem Baptist church in Huntingdon Road was founded in 1800 and the Zion Baptist church in Park Street was founded in 1819. In 1990. the Emmanuel Church in Chatteris was created through the union of the Methodist, United Reformed and Baptist Union churches and established in the former United Reformed building in East Park Street.
