Sapper Charlie Thomas Poole 97712 123rd Field Coy Royal Engineers Died: 31st July 1917 Charles Poole was born in about 1895 in Woodford, Essex. In 1901 Charles Poole was 6, his brother and sister were called Doris and Edward Poole. His mother’s name was Kate and his father was called Thomas. In 1911 he was 16 years old. His job was an organ pipe maker and he was single. He is on the Chatteris memorial probably because his father, Thomas, was born in Chatteris. Thomas joined the Royal Engineers on 4th May 1915, at the time his occupation was a tinsmith. He died on the first day of the 3rd battle of Ypres, 31st July 1917. He is buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery in the Ypres Salient.
