Robert Ernest Stephenson 23467, 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards Died on 25 September 1916 Robert was born about 1893 and in 1911 lived at West Street in Chatteris. He was a farm labourer as were his brother and father. Robert enlisted in Bury St Edmunds and was in the Grenadier Guards and went to the front on August 30th 1916. He was reported as missing until February 1917 when his parents, then living in Tophams Yard, East Park St were officially informed that he was killed in action on September 28th 1916. The 4th Battalion had been involved in the capture of Les Boeufs on the Somme on 25/26th September and were relieved to go back to billets in Carnoy on the night of the 26th/27th September. Robert has no known grave and is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial on the Somme. Robert’s older brother, John, was a Prisoner of War in Germany after being captured at the Battle of Mons.
