?Pte Matthew Gunton 201695, 4th Bn Suffolk Regiment Died on September 27 1917 Matthew Gunton was born in about 1883 in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, England . His mother was called Susanna Gunton and his father was called Matthew Gunton. In 1911 he was a farm labourer working on his brother’s farm and was living with his parents on West Park St. Matthew signed up in Chatteris into the Suffolk Regiment. When he died on 27 September 1917 he was in the 4th Battalion. On the 26th and 27th September the battalion were attacking between Glencorse Wood and FitzClarence farm. During the attack it was so dark and misty that the men advanced holding hands so not to lose touch with each other when they were struck with a barrage. It was almost impossible to advance against it but by the evening of the 27th the division had captured all its objectives. 265 men of the 4th Suffolks were wounded or killed during the attack. Matthew was amongst the dead. Matthew has no known grave and is commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial.
