Pte Josiah Clifton 85979, 87th Coy, Machine Gun Corps (infantry). 16th August 1917 Josiah Clifton was born in early 1894 in Chatteris. Before the war, in 1911, he lived at 15 Wenny Road in Chatteris with his mother and father. He worked as a blacksmith making bikes. Josiah enlisted in Margate, where he lived for a short period before the war, and was initially in the Royal Army Service Corps before joining the Machine Gun Corps. The Cambs Times of 14th Sept 1917 gives details of his death. His officer wrote that: “At about 4.45am on August 16th, during a successful advance, your son was carry forward ammunition to his gun when he was struck by a bullet and killed.” This was the first day of The Battle of Langemarck, part of the 3rd Battle of Ypres.
