Chatteris WW1 Soldier Joseph William Clarke (41231). Chatteris Remembers Biography
Joseph William Clark(e) Private 41231 2nd Essex Regiment Died 22nd December 1916 Joseph was born in 1884, but after much searching we can’t find many details about his family, where they lived etc., but the Witcham Roll of Honour states that he was the son of Mrs.R. Clark and the husband of Lily Day (formerly Clark) of Witcham. We do know that William enlisted in Chatteris in the Suffolk Regiment, where his number was 35133, and subsequently joined the Essex Regiment, with whom he was serving when he was killed in action. The battalion diary shows that it was a ”quiet” day in the tranches near Combles on the Somme, with 4 ”other ranks” recorded as casualties. Joseph has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. File contains: *”Soldiers Died” entry *A photgrpahs of his entry on memorial *Excerpt from Essex Diary
