Name: John Smith Parish No 40161, 8th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment Died: 28 December 1916 age 29 He was born 20th 1888, the second son of Alfred of Chapel Lane.He got married in 1911 for a year and was a farm labourer. He was William and Elizabeth Russell s son in law. His wife was Ada Parish she was born December the 26th 1888 in Chatteris. They were living in Bridge Street. Prior to joining the army he was bandmaster of the Salvation Band, which he had been a member of for 15 years. The Salvation Army in Chatteris held a memorial service for him. He joined the army in the summer of 1916. In the war he was a private, originally in the Essex Regiment. At some point he transferred to the Bedfordshire Regiment. He died in a hospital from his wounds on the battlefield. His brother died on January 1st by a bomb shell. He was buried in the Souvenir Cemetery, Longuenesse, St. Omer.
