Chatteris WW1 Soldier Harry Walter Breckon MM (533358). Chatteris Remembers Biography
Private Harry Walter Breckon 533358, 15th Battalion, London Regiment Died on 27 July 1917 Harry Breckon, was born on 1887 in Eye, and is probably on the Chatteris memorial as his mother, Sarah Jane, was born in the town and returned to live on High Street, Chatteris after her husband, George, died. Henry had three brothers and three sisters. Henry was living in Willesden, London, when the war broke out and he joined the Civil Service Rifles in May 1916. He became a Lewis gunner and was awarded the Military Medal, probably during the Battle of Messines Ridge in June 1917. It is likely that Harry died of wounds obtained during this battle as he died in the casualty clearing station, only a few days after being sent to the front. He was aged 39 when he died. Harry was buried at Godewaersvelde British cemetery. Project File contains: • CWGC certificate • Soldiers died • Medal roll • Photo of his grave • Excerpt of Cambs Times Aug 17 1917 • 1891 census
