Pte Harold Clarke Fletcher 2nd/1st Bedfordshire Yeomanry 1442 Died 28.07.1915 Pte Harold Clarke Fletcher, son of carpenter Daniel Fletcher of 4 Church Lane was born in 1888 in Chatteris. In 1911 he was a picture frame maker living with his parents, sister and niece. Harold enlisted in Chatteris into the Bedfordshire Yeomanry. Harold died on July 28th 1915, Aged 27 years. He had just been pronounced unfit for foreign service as he had been suffering with a heart condition. He was therefore a typist in the orderly room and was writing a letter at his desk when he fell ill and died. At the time of his death Harold was engaged to be married to Miss F Sears. Four of his brothers, three sisters and his parents attended a full military service at the church before he was buried with military honours at Chatteris Parochial Cemetery. The streets were lined with onlookers for the parade and were “nigh on impassable”.
