In 1911 the family was living on London Road and George was still at school. We know little detail about George William’s service in the Lancashire Fusiliers, beyond a very short piece in the Cambs Times of June 21st 1918 stating that he had been taken prisoner. This would tie in with the fact that he is buried in Tournai, where a large number of prisoners of war are buried. He died on 2nd October. A list of his belongings that were sent back to his family is held in Chatteris Museum. His family lived at Lily Holt Cottage in Benwick at the time.
