George Palmer 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, 15501 Died 26.10.1914 George Palmer was the second soldier from Chatteris to die in WW1. He was born in Chatteris in 1896. In 1911 he lived with 3 brothers and 3 sisters and his parents Walter and Hannah at Slade Field, Doddington Road, Chatteris. His younger brother Thomas is also on Chatteris War Memorial. The family worked a small farm. George had enlisted at Bedford and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment prior to the war but by 1914 was a Private in the 1st Battalion of the Grenadier Guards. George died during the 1st Battle of Ypres on 26th October 1914. On this day his battalion were fighting in the area of Zonnebeke and Kruiseecke on the Passchendaele ridge and during the battle the Germans got in behind the 2 battalions of the 2nd Scots Guards and 1st Grenadier Guards and wiped out the 2 battalions. George was initially listed as “missing” after the battle. He wasn’t officially reported as dead until June 1916. George has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate in Ypres.
