Engine Room Artificer 4th Class George McGill M/11123/Ch H.M.S General Crauford Died 24th August 1917 Age 38 George McGill was born on 21 October 1891 in Chatteris. In 1911 he lived with his parents John and Julia at 93 New Rd, Chatteris and was a general engineer. George’s brother, James, was also killed in the war. Before the war George worked at Chatteris Engineering Works and was a member of the football team. George joined the Navy in January 1915 and became an Engine Room Artificer on HMS General Crauford, servicing the ship’s engines and big guns. George died on 24th August 1917. He was climbing out of a boat and lost his footing and fell into the sea. There was a heavy sea and strong tide and he could not be reached by the lifebuoys thrown to him. He drowned at sea and his body was recovered. He is buried at Chatteris New Road Cemetery. George was due to be married on 15th September 1917 whilst on leave.
