Pte George Cooper 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment No 40279 Died on 15 August 1917 George Cooper lived at 19, West Street Chatteris in 1911. At that time George lived in the house of Farmer Herbert Allen who was his brother. His other brothers and his dad, who was 67 also lived there. George was a farm labourer as was his father and three brothers. His brother, Edmund, died of wounds obtained on The Somme. He was born in Woodhurst. By the time of his death he had married Bertha and they had moved to London. George Cooper joined the army in March 1915 and went to France in October of that year. He died in action at the Battle of Passchendaele on 15.08.17 aged 27. His body was not found and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres.
