Pte Fred Squires 65364 59th Field Amb, Royal Army Medical Corps Died: 15 June 1918 Fred Squires was born about 1896 in Chatteris. Hew as the 3rd son of Lydia Squires of 112 High St. In 1911 his mother was a widow and his older brothers butchers. All 3 sons served in WW1. Fred enlisted in 1915 in Huntingdon and joined the RAMC. He was in France for 2 years before he was killed in action on June 15th 1918. In the Cambs Times of July 19th 1918 there is a letter from his CO who says ”Your son was on duty as a stretcher bearer at the time of his death. The post in which he was located was hit by a shell causing the death of your son and another man in this unit.” Fred is buried at Marfaux British Cemetery near Reims.
