Chatteris WW1 Soldier Fred Papworth 9123. Chatteris Remembers Biography
Pte Fred Papworth 9123, 1st Bn Bedfordshire Regiment Died: 5th January 1919 Son of Joseph and Elizabeth, Fred Papworth was born in 1889 in Alconbury. His brother Leonard Papworth also died in the Great War. By 1911 Fred had joined the Army and was residing in Barracks in Aldershot. Fred went out to France right at the beginning of the war on 16th August 1914. He was taken prisoner during 1914 or early 1915 as his memorial card states that he was a prisoner of war for 4 years. Fred died on board the hospital ship “Formosa” on 5th January 1919. He died in Denmark whilst he was being repatriated. Many of those that died on board “Formosa”were victims of the flu epidemic. Fred is buried at Copenhagen Western Cemetery. Thanks to Lorna Jones for photos and information.
