Lance Corporal Ernest Welfare 23027 1st Bn South Staffordshire Regiment Died: 28 October 1918 Ernest Welfare was born about 1894 in Chatteris. In 1901 he lived with his mother, Lydia, and 5 sisters in Station St, Chatteris. Lydia was a char-woman. His father, James, was not listed on the 1901 census return for the family. By 1911 Ernest was aged 17 and was a grocery assistant, boarding with the Marshall family in Stratford Upon Avon. Ernest enlisted in Lincoln and joined the South Staffordshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 28th October 1918 in Italy. His battalion were involved with the fight to cross the River Piave during late October 1918. He is buried at Giavera British Cemetery, Arcade.
