Pte Ernest Barber G/14400, 7th Bn The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) Died: 18 September 1918 Ernest Barber was born in 1900 in Chatteris. In 1901 he was a baby and lived with his family on Southampton Row, his father worked at the engineering works. In 1911 the family lived at 16 Curtis Row/Southampton Place. His brother, Charles, also died in WW1. Ernest was a member of the local football club. Ernest enlisted in Cambridge in February 1918 and went out to France in August 1918. Ernest was killed in action on September 18th. He was initially reported as wounded and then reported as missing until he was confirmed dead at the end of November 1918. His wallet was found on the battlefield by a Canadian Soldier on the day he died. Ernest has is remembered at Unicorn Cemetery, Vendhuile between Bapaume and St Quentin.
