Edwin Powell Private, 3140, Training Depot, Canadian Army Service Corps Died April 8th 1916 Pte Edwin Powell was born on 27 July 1877 in Chatteris. In 1881 the family lived in Bridge Street and Edwin’s father Joseph Powell was a Farmer/Butcher. By 1891 Joseph was a Grocer and Draper on the High St and Edwin was an Ironmonger’s Assistant. On 26 March 1896 Edwin Powell sailed from Liverpool on the Ship “Parisian” of the Allan Line shipping company. His destination was Halifax in Canada. In 1912 his brother, Thomas, died in an accident whilst in Canada. Edwin signed up in the town of Winnipeg in February 1915 into the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force. His occupation is listed as a cleaner on his Attestation Paper. He was 5ft 3inches tall with a 34 inch chest with a sallow complexion and brown eyes. He had dark hair which was slightly grey. Edwin died whilst working at the Training Depot for the Canadian Forces in Shorncliffe in Kent. He is buried in The Chatteris Parochial Cemetery on New Road.
