Second Lieutenant Cyril Thomas Lovell Royal Air Force Died: 15 June 1918 Cyril Thomas Lovell was born about 1896 in Chatteris and was the only son of Samuel and Elizabeth Lovell. In 1911 and throughout the war the family lived at 70 High St, Chatteris. In 1911 Cyril was at school and his father a Grocer and Draper. In 1915 Cyril joined the Honourable Artillery Company and after training in Oxford received his “wings” in June 1917. He went to fly in France in July 1917 but was sent home to England due to ill health. He then trained to be in the Machine Gun Corps and returned to France on 27 May 1918. He was killed in action after being hit by a shell on 15th June 1918. Cyril is buried at Caestre Military Cemetery near Hazebrouck in France. The inscription on his gravestone reads “Fondest Memories Of Our Loving Son. Peace Perfect Peace”. He is remembered on his parents gravestone in Chatteris New Road Cemetery.
