Pte Charles Robert Smith 329158 1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment Died 31st July 1917 age 26 Charles Smith was born about 1890, the 4th son of Thomas Smith and Ziliah Smith . In 1911, he was a bakers labourer and lived in New Street,Chatteris. By the time he died he had married Martha and had a son, also Charles and another child and lived at 18 New Rd. Charles enlisted into the Cambridgeshire Regiment in Bury St Edmunds in August 1916. Charles died on the opening day of the Battle of Passchendaele, the 1st Cambridgeshires were fighting at St Julien near Ypres. A comrade wrote that he was at the very front of the attack on the first day of the battle, 31st July 1917. He fought alongside Cpl Barker of Chatteris and was killed instantly by a sniper. He is buried at the Poelcapelle British cemetery.
