Name Pte Charles Henry Barber Battalion, No. 203196, 2/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Died 4th April 1917 Charles Henry Barber was born in Chatteris in the year of 1898. In 1911 he lived at 16 Curtis Row, London Road. His household members were Henry, Francis, Percy, Annie, Charles, Ernest, William, Albert and Emily Barber. He worked as a farm labourer before he signed up at Whitehall in Middlesex. Charles was stationed in Ireland before leaving for France on February 10th 1917. He was killed instantly in an attack on the village of Le Verguier (between St Quentin and Peronne). The battalion war diary states that the attacking troops came under heavy shell and concealed machine gun fire and fell back to their original positions during a heavy snow storm. I officer and 19 other ranks were killed in the attack and 84 wounded. Charles is buried at Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy.
