Lance Corporal Alfred Cyril Young 16672 2nd Bn Suffolk Regiment Died: 28/29 March 1918 Alfred Young was born about 1899 in Chatteris. In 1911 he was only 12 years old and lived with his father and sister in Cox’s Lane, Bridge St. He enlisted in Chatteris into the Suffolk Regiment. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission entry states that he was killed in action on March 28th 1918 but an article in the Cambs Times of April 19th 1918 states that he was killed instantly in the midst of very severe fighting on the 29th. The 2nd Suffolks moved into the frontline overlooking Wancourt to the south east of Arras on 27th March 1918. After a violent bombardment throughout the night and the morning of the 28th they were attacked and forced to retreat before holding the line against attack after attack until they were relieved on March 30th. Alfred has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
