Name: Pte Alfred James Elsden 88892, 22nd coy Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Died: 26th October 1917 age 20 Alfred James Elsden was born on October 8th 1897 in Chatteris. In 1911 he was a 13 year old errand boy and lived with his parents Alfred and Eliza in High St, Chatteris. His older brother Percy also died in the war. His father was a hairdresser. By the end of the war the family lived at 20 Market Hill. Alfred joined up in January 1917 and went out to the front in May 5th 1917. He died on 26th October 1917. This was the day that the Battle of Passchendaele was re-invigorated following a brief respite in the attack during mid October. Alfred has no known grave and is commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial.
